The excitement has been high for Day 1 of TRENZ 2024 at Tākina, Wellington Convention and Exhibition Centre. TRENZ is the most significant international business-to-business travel and trade event on the New Zealand tourism industry calendar. It's an amazing opportunity to profile us as the gateway to Ōtautahi Christchurch and showcase the many highlights of the South Island. If you're attending, make sure you stop by and say hi to the Christchurch Airport team. #TRENZ2024 #traveltrade #tourism

China Southern Airlines will return to Christchurch in October for an expanded season of its direct service between Christchurch Airport and the international hub of Guangzhou. China’s largest carrier will fly to Christchurch five times a week for five months from the end of October, which is a 52% increase in capacity on the past summer. Christchurch Airport General Manager of Aeronautical Development, Gordon Bevan, says the airline and airport have committed to working more closely together. “We know China’s high value passengers – and those who come from further afield on this direct service – want to experience all the South Island of New Zealand has to offer. “We recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding on our aligned goals, which include further building the attraction of the South Island in the shoulder seasons. One of the aims of this work is to meet increasing interest from China’s travellers to ski here and we hope China Southern will be flying here year-round before much longer,” he says. As well as tourism, the MOU also focuses on growing the education, food safety and high value cargo services between the airline and airport. https://lnkd.in/gt2Chbfn

While there is no doubt that this year’s Warbirds over Wānaka International Airshow was a sellout success, you could have been forgiven for thinking Christchurch held its own airshow in the days leading up to the event. We’re super proud to play a role in ensuring the aircraft that wow the crowds for that fantastic event can get there. You can read a little more about the role we play here- https://lnkd.in/grJCbEf8

We’ve been making progress on our journey to make Christchurch Airport the safest and most inclusive airport for our rainbow communities and last week during Ōtautahi Pride celebrations we took another step forward with the amazing Martin King 🏳️🌈 from Pride Pledge🏳️🌈 coming to speak our team. As Martin said to us – no business, organisation or person will ever reach the end of that journey, but doing things like lighting up our terminal in rainbow colours, installing rainbow art installations, having all gender bathrooms, using pronouns, wearing rainbow lanyards and, most importantly, training our team on our LGBTTQIPA+ communities ensures all rainbow people feel seen, heard and supported whilst they are at Christchurch Airport. Mihi nui Martin – your energy on Friday fired us up and has made us think about what else we can do. 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈 🏳️🌈

Someone did a happy dance in our office today (the performer wishes to remain anonymous). Why? From later this year, Qantas is adding more than 175,000 seats on its services between Christchurch, and Melbourne and Brisbane. This is great news – you can read more about it in our media release: https://bit.ly/4aqkw4w

Tomorrow, Sunday 16 March, a special exhibition will be held in Lyttelton as part of #UnityWeekNZ. 51 Threads commemorates the events of the March 15 terror attack through the arts of calligraphy and embroidery. Those who lost loved ones have chosen a word or phrase which has been rendered in Arabic calligraphy on a piece of fabric and then hand-embroidered. The words pay tribute to the memories of those lost five years on from the attack. Our chief executive justin watson had the honour of meeting those behind the exhibition as we made a contribution to help make it a reality from our Community Fund. We’ve been moved by their stories and know the exhibition itself will open eyes and hearts. For more info visit www.unityweek.co.nz/events Asalaamu alaykum.
