North American students of archaeology are often fascinated by the archaeology of Europe, but often have misconceptions about continental archaeology. I introduce Europe's history of archaeology, archaeological philosophy over the last century and a half, and the continent's archaeological record, from earliest hominin arrivals to the late Medieval. I comment as a guide to this material for students educated in the North American, anthropologically-centered paradigm.
