Kuala Lumpur, Oct 9: Frequent complaints of stiffness and body aches can signal the need for professional intervention to rectify poor posture, according to Janice Chan Vey Lian, Deputy Director at the Centre for Complementary and Alternative Medicine at the International Medical University (IMU).
As part of World Spine Day 2023, an annual event dedicated to raising awareness about spine health, she provides insights on putting an end to back pain.

S = Sit Up Straight and Stretch!

Janice emphasizes that poor posture and lifestyle habits are the primary culprits behind musculoskeletal pain.
Often, individuals are unaware of their posture and how they perform daily tasks, whether it’s using digital devices or handling everyday responsibilities.
The pandemic-induced changes, such as working and studying from home, have exacerbated these issues.
To combat musculoskeletal pain, individuals should actively maintain good posture and incorporate regular stretching into their routine.

T = Take a break

The theme for World Spine Day 2023 is ‘Move Your Spine.’
Janice recommends setting regular reminders to get up and move, emphasizing the importance of translating awareness into action.

O = Organise

Janice offers practical tips to reorganize both home and workspaces for better posture:

  • Adjust computer screen height to eye level.
  • Optimize screen view and brightness.
  • Use a chair with proper back support.
  • Employ a stool to avoid bending while gardening or bathing.
  • Keep frequently used items within easy reach.
  • Manage heavy loads wisely.
  • Carry smaller or lighter loads.
  • Utilize correct lifting posture.
  • Seek guidance from a fitness trainer for proper exercise techniques.

P = Professional Help

Janice highlights the role of chiropractors in identifying and addressing musculoskeletal issues, improving spine health, and enhancing overall well-being.
While musculoskeletal pain often develops gradually, small and immediate adjustments can make a significant difference.
She encourages open communication between patients and chiropractors to ensure clear expectations and effective treatment.

Curious about chiropractors?

  • Chiropractors can assist with various musculoskeletal issues, with a focus on alignment, range of motion, optimizing daily tasks, and reducing strain.
  • Chiropractors and physiotherapists serve different roles, but their practices may overlap based on patient needs.
  • Chiropractors are registered and recognized by the Ministry of Health Malaysia, with licensed practitioners listed on the Traditional and Complementary Medicine Division portal.

First session expectations:

A typical first session involves a medical history assessment, physical examination, observation of gait and range of motion, and joint stress tests.
Chronic conditions and medical history are also considered.

Bringing along:

Patients may bring relevant medical history documentation, such as recent blood tests or scans.

Session frequency:

The number and frequency of sessions depend on individual needs. Acute situations may require more frequent sessions, while others may opt for a longer-term approach to care.
