Monarto Safari Park is saddened to announce one of Husani’s lion cubs had to be humanely euthanised on the weekend of 29 January 2022.
Attentive keepers were using den cameras to keep a close watch over the lioness and her five cubs and noticed the young male was not feeding or moving around the den like his siblings.
After speaking in depth with the Zoos SA veterinarian team, keepers made the decision to retrieve the cub. He would not have survived if left in the den and unfortunately there was nothing further the team could do for him. The decision to euthanise an animal is never made lightly, but it was the kindest choice for him to be put down.
Husani is a beautiful and loving mother. She was caring for the little one until the end. The other four cubs are in good health and have been feeding and progressing well.
Keepers are saddened by the news, as is the wider Zoos SA family. The loss is particularly significant as each cub brings hope for this vulnerable species.
We will continue to monitor Husani and her cubs closely. We thank you for your support and look forward to honouring the little cub’s life through his siblings and their pride in the coming months.
