Zoos SA
Zoos SA is a non-government conservation charity, every visit, adoption, donation and ticket helps to save species from extinction.

For eight-year-old lioness Husani and her adorable new cubs, born at Monarto Safari Park on Monday 24 January, life is looking bright. Free roaming in hectares of plains – safe and sound with the rest of the pride.

However, lions in their native Africa face a very different future with their population decreasing due to indiscriminate killing, habitat loss and trophy hunting. It is therefore imperative that breeding programs like the one at Monarto Safari Park exist – they are pivotal to securing the future of this beautiful species.

There’s no better way to support our pride here and in Africa than becoming a Lion adopter!

Support Husani and her new cubs

Lion adopters support conservation work both here at Monarto Safari Park and on-ground work in Africa like rangers patrolling the Sera Conservancy in Kenya, and our partnership with the Painted Dog Conservation Inc supporting the Zambian Carnivore Program. You’ll be making a difference to be proud of!

Lion Adopters also receive an exclusive photograph of the newborn cubs taken in their den, as well as lion fact sheet and regular updates on Husani and her cubs.

Adoption is the pawfect way to show you care, and is a great gift for your own cubs and kits.

Lion Cub Updates

Monarto Safari Park is saddened to announce one of Husani’s lion cubs had to be humanely euthanised on the weekend of 29 January 2022.

Attentive keepers were using den cameras to keep a close watch over the lioness and her five cubs and noticed the young male was not feeding or moving around the den like his siblings.

After speaking in depth with the Zoos SA veterinarian team, keepers made the decision to retrieve the cub. He would not have survived if left in the den and unfortunately there was nothing further the team could do for him. The decision to euthanise an animal is never made lightly, but it was the kindest choice for him to be put down.

Husani is a beautiful and loving mother. She was caring for the little one until the end. The other four cubs are in good health and have been feeding and progressing well.

Keepers are saddened by the news, as is the wider Zoos SA family. The loss is particularly significant as each cub brings hope for this vulnerable species.

We will continue to monitor Husani and her cubs closely. We thank you for your support and look forward to honouring the little cub’s life through his siblings and their pride in the coming months.

Safeguarding Lions from extinction

At Monarto Safari Park, we are home to one of Australia’s largest lion prides and are part of the international breeding program safeguarding this species from extinction. Any cubs born at Monarto Safari Park will play a significant role not only in our breeding program to bolster the insurance population for this vulnerable species but also as ambassadors for their species, acting as a powerful educational tool to shed light on the plight of their wild cousins.

Your adoption means we can strengthen our conservation work and help safeguard this incredible species.

All donations of $2 and more are tax deductible.

Our breeding and conservation work also wouldn’t be possible without the amazing support of wonderful corporate partners like ElectraNet.
