Singing and COVID-19 – research on aerosols and singing
Clusters of COVID-19 occurring in choirs led to many governments banning singing and the playing of certain instruments. In the absence of any research in this area, two ENT surgeons (our Editor, Declan Costello, and ENT Senior Trainee, Natalie Watson) teamed up with aerosol scientists from Bristol University, and with clinical researchers from the Brompton. Hearing loss: a challenge in Uganda
Over the years there has been increasing awareness of the plight of children with sensory problems, especially hearing loss and deafness. The charity, Helping Uganda Schools (HUGS), is currently funding a new school in Jinja which will accommodate up to 90 children with sensory needs. Read more...
Alan Gibb, who passed away on 5 September aged 101, was the Grand Old Man of British Otology. He was a Consultant at Dundee Royal Infirmary and then at Ninewells Hospital, Dundee, from 1950 until he retired in 1984. He was also a man of utter integrity and humility and a selfless professional. Read more...
Bernard Colman (1924-2020)
Bernard’s teaching to trainees in the specialty was inspirational. He was so proud of them all and immensely interested in their future careers. Bernard and his beloved Ilse had no children of their own, but all his trainees looked on him as their father figure. Nearly all have fond memories and apocryphal stories about him! Read more...

FESS course held as socially distanced face-to-face event
On 3-4 September, the RCSI played host to the annual Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery course in Dublin, Ireland. Spread out over two days, more than 20 trainees and 10 consultant supervisors adhered to social distancing guidelines and attended a blended workshop of small group teaching and practical dissection sessions.
