SCA (Qld) News - 11 August 2022

From the General Manager

It's been a huge month for SCA (Qld) across all areas of the organisation and I have been very proud of the SCA team and our volunteers who have worked tirelessly on behalf of our members and the strata sector.

This month has seen our advocacy and legislative reform programs shift up another gear as we represented the sector at the BUGTA parliamentary committee hearings and made submissions to the State Government on issues such as Air BnB, Debt Recovery and the Justices Act. These are large bodies of work that require the efforts of many people who commit to many hours. Thank you.

The BIG submission to the State Government was on Management Rights. We will be sending out a separate communique on this particular issue, however I would like to share with members that the SCA (Qld) submission was considered, fair, future focused, and well thought-through; reflecting the overwhelming sentiment of our members as gleaned from the recent Hackathon, and the work and direct consultation conducted by our Legislation Committee over the last 6 months.

The recent Leadership Retreat in Hobart was a wonderful success and testament to the relationships and sense of community that bind our sector together. Personally, I arrived not knowing many people and left with firm friendships. I was particularly impressed by the level of support and camaraderie on display as the participants solved some of the big issues currently facing strata businesses. It's a good day when we can remove our competitive barriers and share views and problems frankly and fearlessly in the interest of bettering ourselves and, as a result, the sector.

Please keep an eye out for our upcoming engagement opportunities and in particular the Educational Webinars and events that all go toward those important CPD totals. And for those of you attending the Golf Day later this month - I'll see you there.

Cheers!
Laura

Mental health an experience or symptomatic event

Mental health is regularly viewed as an experience or symptomatic event that negatively impacts our lives. This false assumption positions mental health as something that an individual is or isn't experiencing and fails to recognise the other end of the spectrum when mental health is flourishing. Just like with physical health, we each have days when we feel better, average, or worse – it's an experience that is dynamic and moves along a continuum.

Understanding the mental health continuum, and where you sit on it, is a great first step in bettering your overall wellbeing. However, it is also important to know what steps to take when you recognise that your wellbeing isn't where you would like it to be. Regardless of where you currently sit on the continuum, a key step may include engaging in therapy. This may be to help resolve an underlying concern or to gain insight and strategies to move from 'good' to 'great'.

Our Member Benefit Partner - Acacia EAP, recently published a tip sheet that discusses the four types of short-term, solution-focused therapy their EAP Professionals utilise within their sessions. The tip sheet details the purposes, aims, and steps of each of these therapies.
